Gardening Hoes – A Great Investment

You’d think it would be quite easy to find but I challenge you to find one in a DIY or hardware store – I’m talking about gardening hoes. I’d managed to survive 25 years of gardening without actually owning one, but I was speaking to a neighbor a few weeks ago and he mentioned it was one of his most useful tools.

However for me I wasn’t entirely sure what you would use a garden hoe for anyway. The hoe is actually one of man’s oldest tools which I think is one reason B&Q should be ashamed of not stocking them (well in my local branch anyway). There are quite a few different types but I was recommended to buy a digging hoe.

An Inexpensive Gardening Hoe - this is actually a Digging Hoe

You’ll find lots of uses for these – I find them especially good for moving shrubs and smaller trees. You can dig under the roots and lever them out with this sort of gardening hoe. I have got quite heavy, clay soil and moving any sort of shrub with decent roots can be a real pain with a fork or spade but this is just the right shape.

But the beauty behind this tool is that you’ll find loads of other uses. It can be used as a mini-plough to turn over earth, dig out your potatoes or indeed create the trench for planting them in the first place.

In fact you’ll probably even find some uses outside the garden, this little gardening hoe was also used to clear ice off a garden path with great success. Anyway enough of this – where did I actually find this useful tool – I bought this one from Amazon – the Silverline GT52 Digging Hoe

For under £10 you won’t find many bargains like this and as long as you don’t start getting carried away and attempting to dig out anything too big then it’s tough enough for a myriad of garden jobs. I was almost expecting it to be a little cheap feeling for that price but it really has a decent solid feel to the tool.

Starting a Garden of Your Own is Great Fun For Grown Ups!

The largest held belief about gardening is that it is easy and doesn’t take a lot of work. While it is true that there is a lot of hard work involved in growing a garden, that work is usually very rewarding. Most gardeners say that working in a garden feels more like playing even if that work is weed pulling. Obviously the size and scope of your garden will dictate how much work you need to put into your garden. One thing is always the same: whether you’re growing a small indoor garden or a large yard sized garden, you are going to find the experience very rewarding.

Take some time to improve the quality of the dirt you want to use for your garden. No two patches of soil are the same. In fact, the dirt that is already in your yard is probably not the best for growing plants at all, which might be why you’ve had trouble growing a garden in the past. Different types of seeds have different nutrient needs.

Prepare the ground before you plant. The best way to prepare your garden soil is to spread organic matter over the top of it. To improve the quality of soil, compost is best but if used a few months ahead of time, grass clippings and mulch also work well. As the organics decompose they leave behind their nutrients and vitamins which helps your garden thrive.

The best way to loosen up your garden’s soil is to dig into it before you actually start the planting process. Make sure gardening conditions are right or digging could be a bad idea.

You want to dig when your soil is moist. It should be moist enough that you can form it into a ball with your hands when you dig it up from the ground. If the ground is too moist the ball will hold together when you drop it. Your best tool for this job is a spade or a spading fork that you can use to turn the soil and get the air moving through it.

Don’t purchase every tool in the garden shop just because they’re hanging there. Start with a few basics like a garden rake, a garden spade and a good hose and then build from there. Over time, as you work with your plants, you’ll figure out which tools you actually use regularly and which are only used for special projects. Resist the urge to buy all of the tools being upsold to you by the gardening clerk at the store. You might wind up tossing a bunch of money away on tools that you won’t ever use! Lots of grown men and women view gardening the same way little kids view playing outside. Many people insist that working in the garden is a fantastic way to work through most of the stress that they feel after the end of a long work day. Other people say that working in the garden is just a fun time for them. Even others garden because they want to say save money by growing their own food. There are all sorts of reasons for starting a garden. Just remember, even though you will have to work hard in your garden you will also get lots of joy from your garden.

Selecting the Ideal Work Boots for Large Sizes

When you require work boots for large sizes, it’s possible you’ll have to take a look at more places than just your local shoe store or shopping mall. On the subject of shoes and boots, it’s imperative to look for something that fits suitable, are built well and also comfy to wear. There are some critical concerns you should be aware of if you’re trying to find work boots for large sizes, and we’ll be going over those below.

There are a variety of work boot styles for big sizes even some for more hazardous conditions that might require a steel toed boot. Steel toed boots provide the ultimate in protection for your feet especially in construction, machinery or heavy tool jobs where they may be a job requirement. If you don’t have the right protection for your feet they can be quite vulnerable, even the best steel toed boot can even be insufficient for some conditions. An injury to a foot can be quite painful not to mention disabling in some cases.

Online stores often carry the broadest selection of steel toed boots. If you are considering ordering online though you want to make sure they have a good return policy. One problem with buying shoes online is that you can’t try them on first. Some brands will offer a slightly different sizing scale. If you don’t have a good return policy this can cause problems if the boot you order doesn’t fit when it arrives. Of course, if you have a regular brand that you buy, and you simply replace them when they wear out, then you can be fairly safe as you know exactly what to order. It’s for this reason that you need a good return policy before you purchase.

The height of your boot is something you should consider when looking for new boots. Cowboy boots are often tall but work boots are available in a variety of boot heights. Many people prefer a taller boot when their legs and ankles need protection for whatever reason. Some people also like the look of tall boots. If you are a motorcycle connoisseur you may prefer a taller boot for more protection of the leg from the heat. However if you live in a warmer climate you might not want a taller boot because it will likely make your legs hotter. Something to keep in mind is your boot height even though the ultimate decision is up to you and your personal preferences. These are only a few of the many considerations you will make when shopping for large size work boots. You don’t want to replace them often so they not only need to be comfortable but also durable as well as adequate for the climate and work you need them for. In this article we’ve covered some of the most important factors to consider when shopping for work boots for big sizes. While you may be the brains of the operation your feet are the brawn; let them tell you what boot is the right one.

Flymo Turbo Compact 330-Any Good ?

A well manicured lawn is attractive to the eyes. It might sound silly, but it invariably cheers people up and makes our houses look much more pleasant and more importantly cared for. But unfortunately mowing a lawn can be a real pain especially an oddly shaped lawn. Fortunately some of the best lawnmowers on the market can make the job a lot easier that it used to be – the question is does the new flymo turbo compact 330 cut the mustard. I’m not a big fan of hover mowers but to be honest it’s been a while since I tried one.

Flymo Turbo Compact 330

Flymo Turbo Compact 330

The Flymo Turbo Compact 330 Grass Collecting Electric Hover Lawn Mower (phew that’s mouthful) has a 33 cm metal blade powered by 1500 Watt motor which should be more than adequately powered for most gardens.
With a fairly large grass collection bin which can accommodate 30 liters of grass, it does minimize the main time consuming part of mowing the lawn which is emptying the grass every five minutes. To be fair the Flymo stored a decent amount of grass although it doesn’t compress nearly as much as some lawnmowers so you’ll still have to empty it quite a bit on a normal sized lawn.

The brochure says the unit is designed to withstand the test of time with a minimum level of maintenance, although I found this particular Flymo to fee a little flimsy but it’s often the case with the electric mowers which make a real effort to minimise the weight.

The cable is approximately 15 meters long which is a decent size, if you’ve had an electric mower before you’ll know whether your garden is suitable. If you haven’t just think for a while, if you’ve got lots of ornaments, shrubs and flower bed interspersed in your lawn are you going to manage pulling a cord along. It’s perfectly ok on many lawns where there aren’t many obstacles – but on some lawns using a corded mower is an absolute nightmare.

Inside the package, you get the Turbo Compact 330 unit (which is the mower in case you’re wondering), an instructional guide and a guarantee registration card. The instructional guide will help you set up the unit. It will also help you on how to properly use the product. It has the dos’ and don’ts so you will have an idea on how to take care of your unit. A one year warranty is already included with the product. It’s pretty easy to set up but as I mentioned it doesn’t exactly feel sturdy – despite this feeling it’s actually quite heavy compared to many electric lawnmowers even when hovering.

Now for the real test, how does it actually cut the grass? Well I tried the Flymo Turbo compact 330 on a relatives lawn – the grass hadn’t been cut for about two weeks in August so was quite long. It was perfectly dry though so it shouldn’t have been too bad, but I’m afraid it wasn’t a pleasant experience.

When I started using it all my remembered horrors of using Flymos in the 1980s came back, it doesn’t seem that they’ve improved much. My main problem (which is a fairly fundamental one) is that it doesn’t cut the grass well – because it’s quite heavy the hovering motion just seems to squash a lot of the grass rather than cut it.

I went over the lawn twice and there were big areas which just had squashed grass, it just lefts these clumps all over the lawn. It was fairly pointless going back over them as the more they got squashed the less likely the grass would be cut – I’m sorry but this is a big fundamental design flaw if the Flymo Turbo Compact 330 I used is typical. Maybe mine was faulty but it looked like more than that to me.

These mowers are pretty cheap but there are loads of better ones at similar price points. It’s honestly not worth saving a few quid getting a mower like this, it’s kind of depressing spending ages mowing a lawn then it not looking much better and the Turbo Compact 330 made a right mess of cutting my relatives lawn. It’s main selling point is cost but you’d expect a few years service out of even a cheap mower and this mower is just not that good at cutting grass – have a look what others think on the Amazon site – Opinions on 330 – I am not alone I think!

Do yourself a huge favor and spend a few pounds extra and get the much, much better mower here – I’ve had mine for four years and it cuts beautifully – it is frankly in a different league to this hover thing.

Brown Patch and Other Lawn Diseases

There are many different lawn diseases that can jeopardize the health of your lawn at any given time. Being educated about these different diseases and the harm that they cause can help you to treat and prevent them.

One very common lawn disease is known as brown patches. Brown patches are most common in areas that experience high levels of humidity and shade. They most commonly occur in Kentucky Bluegrass, Bermuda grass, Bent grass, St. Augustine grass, Centipede grass, and Ryegrasses. These brown spots typically will start out small, but they can quickly spread out in horseshoe or circular patterns. They can grow to be up to several feet wide. Many times, as the brown spot is expanding, the inside of it will recover. This will leave a brown ring in your lawn. The best way to prevent these brown spots from occurring is through regular aeration of your lawn. You can also reduce the shade to the effected areas. This will help them to grow back. A couple common fungicides that are used to treat brown patches are benomyl and chlorothalonil.
Another common lawn disease is the fairy ring. Fairy rings can grow in almost any type of grass. They are circular rings that are filled with a fast growing, dark green grass. Typically, the outside of the ring will turn brown and grow mushrooms. They are most typically found growing in soils that contain a lot of wood debris or old decaying trees. The best way to prevent fairy rings from growing in your lawn is to aerate the area that is effected by the fairy rings. This will help to kill them. It is also a good idea to water only in the early morning hours to help prevent them from growing. You should remove any excess thatch from your lawn, as well. Increasing the nitrogen levels in your lawn through fertilization is also a good way to prevent fairy rings.

Red Thread is another lawn disease that can turn your lawn brown. Red Thread is most commonly found in Fescues, Ryegrasses, and Kentucky Bluegrass. The name ‘Red Thread’ is taken from the pinkish-read threads that are formed around the blades of the grass. These threads then bind the grass blades together. The grass that is affected by Red Thread will eventually turn brown. Since Red Thread attacks only the leaves and leaf sheathes of the grass, it is rarely serious enough to kill the grass. It is easiest to spot Red Thread when the grass is wet. The best way to prevent Red Thread from occurring is to aerate your lawn often and remove any thatch that may have fallen onto the lawn. It is also important to follow a regular fertilization schedule. Chlorothalonil is a commonly used fungicide that can help to treat Red Thread.

Lawn diseases can cause a lot of damage to your lawn, if left untreated. With the proper knowledge, you can spot these diseases and stop them before they get out of control. This article was brought to you by the best electric lawnmower team, thank you for reading.

Considering Buying a Cordless Electric Mower ?

When most people think of lawn mowers, they think of loud machines that produce smelly clouds of exhaust. This is not necessarily true anymore. There are many alternatives to the old gas power lawn mowers of the past. A cordless electric lawn mower is a great choice for your next lawn mower.

There are a number of drawbacks to the old style of gas powered lawn mowers. For one thing, they are loud. In fact, many of them are very loud. This makes it inconvenient to use them early in the morning before the hottest part of the day. These machines also create pollution and exhaust. They also require that you fill them with gas and oil often, as well as perform a lot of regular maintenance in order to keep them running properly. All of this can add up to be quite a hassle for the user.

Cordless electric mowers can provide you with a great alternative to gas powered mowers. There are many benefits to using a cordless electric lawn mower. One benefit is that an electric lawn mower costs less to operate. Another one of these benefits is the noise. A cordless electric mower is much quieter than a gas lawn mower. This allows you to mow the lawn whenever you want without the fear of waking up the neighbors. Cordless electric mowers also require very little maintenance. This means that you can spend your time actually mowing the lawn instead of spending time working on your lawn mower before getting to mow the lawn. You will not have to fill the mower with gas and oil. It will also not produce any toxic emissions at all. You can just charge the mower up and be ready to go in no time. While an electric mower will not be as powerful as a gas mower, it will definitely have enough power to cut your lawn effectively and efficiently.

There are a few downsides to an electric mower to keep in mind if you are looking into getting this type of mower, though. One downside is that cordless electric lawn mowers are designed for smaller lawns. The usual run time for these types of mowers is about 30 to 60 minutes. This provides you with enough time to mow about one fourth to one third of an acre. Some models, however, let you change out the battery. This allows you to swap out the drained battery for a charged one and then you can keep mowing longer. Another downside is that cordless electric lawn mowers are heavier than gas powered lawn mowers. They are heavier because of their large batteries that supply them with power. This can make mowing up hills a bit more difficult.

A cordless electric lawn mower can be a great alternative to a conventional gasoline powered lawn mower. It is important to know what your needs are if you are looking into buying one of these mowers. Knowing and understanding exactly what your needs are can help you to make the best lawn mower.

Lawn Leveling Tips – How do you Level Lawns

The key to achieving a clean, even placement of a lawn lies in the preparation of the site on which the grass is to grow on: no rubble, no protruding large stones, no holes or crevices on the ground that may twist one’s ankle, hide tiny objects, even creatures, that inadvertently roll onto lawn grass, and will make the task of mowing the lawn difficult.
The first step to level lawns – is to clear the area of unwanted objects like tree stumps and large stones. This is done by digging or by using a Rotavator. If there are weeds or unwanted vegetation growing, a systemic weed killer may be sprayed onto the soil to discourage the further growth of weeds. After clearing, the soil is raked to improve soil structure. This also facilitates the leveling process.
Leveling Lawns
The next step is to do soil patching to further even out the surface area and to create a planting surface that is acceptable to the roots of the plants. This can be done by dragging topsoil from one area of the lawn to the other in order to create an even planting surface. Well-drained, sandy loam makes the best topsoil for a lawn. It should be free draining, but at the same time be able to retain a certain water level that can prevent plants from completely drying out. Sand may also be added to the topsoil to level the soil but it can turn cement-like when dry and can cause soil drainage problems. Used alone, sand is not a good surface to grow grass on.
To achieve a uniform level for the planting area, mark the desired soil height using string that is drawn taught on pegs. These pegs are evenly plotted on the area, creating a uniform grid that will guide the distribution of the soil. Adjust the soil level to the marks indicated by the lines. Repeat the digging, raking and leveling processes until a level surface is achieved. The soil is then firmed down.

Cover the whole area with topsoil, preferably 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) deep. Tread evenly over the ground to test if the soil is evenly firm. Take care not to over-compress so that the soil won’t get compacted or water-logged. No activity should be undertaken on the soil surface within the next 4-6 weeks to allow the soil particles to settle down naturally. Lightly fertilize; water the soil thoroughly a few days before putting the grass in.

If lawn ruts or uneven spots appear after the grass has been allowed to grow, patch the soil with an equal mixture of sand and dry topsoil, evenly spreading the mixture, but not entirely covering up the growing grass underneath. Compost may also be added to the patching soil mix for a richer planting medium.

That should be it, keep an eye on the lawn but over time, this uneven spot should eventually level out. These are the simple steps in lawn leveling, it’s not as difficult as it seems. You can save on professional fees. But more importantly is the fact that you will derive much satisfaction in doing your own lawn leveling

Hydroseeding your Lawns

Hydroseeding is a modern and easy way of planting grass on your lawn. In hydroplanting, grass seeds, water, fertilizer, fiber mulch, and lime (optional) are blended together and applied to a prepared lawn area through a spraying hose. The wet fiber, which acts as the planting medium, easily bonds with the soil, creating a water-retaining blanket that will provide the seeds protection from the elements, as well as the nutrients they need, while being established. As the seeds germinate, the growing medium gradually decomposes and adds nutrients to the soil.

Hydroseeding your lawn

Taking Care of Grass

Planting your lawn by hydroseeding has advantages and disadvantages, which are discussed below.
Advantages. Hydroseeding allows for a big lawn area to planted at a relatively shorter period of time. The spraying process covers a wider planting area much more quickly than seeding or sodding. This method also makes it possible to efficiently seed contours and slopes. Because the wet fiber actually adheres to the soil, it creates a surface that prevents soil erosion. Hydroseeding can actually reduce erosion. Hydroseeding costs less than planting with sod, but more than regular seeding. The technology costs more, as well as the actual application which can only be done by trained professionals.

Hydroseeding has been found to result in higher seed germination rates as compared to regular seeding. Because it creates lush growth, mowing and lawn maintenance can actually start at less than a month after the date of application. The fiber in the mulch maintains moisture around the seeds, thus increasing seed germination rate.
Disadvantages. Hydroseeding companies offer limited grass varieties to choose from. Usually, these are sturdy grass varieties that lend themselves well to the procedures.
As in conventional seeding, hydroseeding cannot be done at just about any time of the year, or whenever the lawn owner wants hydroseeding to be done. In order to get the best results, hydroseeding should be done immediately prior to the prime growing season of the specific grass variety. It is seed and season-specific.
Hydroseeding also is a costly process, and one that is best done by professional hydroseeding companies. The technology does not lend itself to “do-it-yourself” gardener. Not only is the hydroseeding sprayer costly; operating it properly requires training and skill.

Nonetheless, in order to make the hydroseeding effort a success, here are some preliminary procedures that have to be undertaken.
Follow their instructions the company will give you on soil preparation. If none are given, you can do this task by going over your soil bed with a lawn roller that is filled with water to 1/2 or 1/4 level.
Get cost estimates from hydroseeding companies in your area. Do not settle for one company, but get comparative costs based on the types of services they offer, types of planting materials or hydroseeding blends they have, and other costs that the planting procedure will entail.
The hydroseed mixture is green in color and the area where it is applied will acquire a green color. This makes it easier to spot missed areas, or areas that need reapplication. The seeds will germinate in about a week. Maintenance can begin at 3 to 4 weeks after the date of application. The hydroseeding company teaches the technique of watering a hydroseeded lawn. Should there be areas of the lawn that show sparse growth or no growth at all, the hydroseeding company can be asked to remedy to the situation.

We hope you found this article useful brought to you by the best lawnmower team !
