Which Is Better Cylinder Or Rotary Lawn Mower?
i am have problems when mowing new grass plants growing with my vacuum cleaner mower,
and can not keep the grass, that sort,
the mower for me that a new cylinder or rotary mower
mower. . . . . .
My staff prefer a rotary mower with a mulching deck. The advantage of the mulching deck is you do not need to pick up the trimmings.
Cylinder mowers leave a better finish but they cannot handle ‘brown tops’ these are the seed stalks from some varieties of grass so you have to go over it first with a rotary mower.
to answer your query about the grass coming out of the lawn. you have started cutting the lawn far to early. leave it to thicken up and grow longer. when you start to cut put the mower on the highest cut and just top the grass. leave for another week and then cut lower.as the grass starts to realy thicken up then you can cut lower.
next to answer the question which mower?.
the cylinder mower gives the best results as is will give the striped lawn that looks the best, however you must have a realy flat lawn. the other thing you must do is cut the lawn regularly as the cylinder mower cannot cope with long grass and the flower spikes that will grow if the lawn is not cut often.
the rotory mower will cope with non level lawns and cut longer grass but will never give you the fine finish of the cylinder mower.
A cylinder mower has an action similar to scissors. It snips off the grass between the cylinder and a fixed blade so it gives a more precise cut – but it does need a level surface to work on. A rotary mower just relies on the speed of the blades to hammer the grass and break it off. If you want a first class lawn, roll it flat then use a cylinder mower.
You need extremely flat lawns for a cylinder mower. Stick to a rotary.
Many upscale golf courses use what I call a reel mower in the USA. However they are expensive and labor intensive to maintain. A rotary mower will work fine. Make certain the blade is sharp and running at full speed. A dull slow blade can tear the grass blades and pull them out.
Cylinder mowers give the best cut, but will not cut grass that has been left grow more than about an inch an a half which causes problems in the winter when some people still cut. Cylinder mowers are very expensive and require more maintenance and the can’t cut up to the edge of the lawn. If the lawn is uneven it will scalp. New grass should not be cut untill it reaches about 4 inches which you will need a rotary mower for they don’t give the best cut but it will do.
I have never know grass “come out”, I can only imagine you have very sandy soil and the grass is very young.
Generally cylinder mowers give the best results I also think they are more energy efficient however they require more maintenance. I suggest you let you grass establish even if this means it gets very long before you cut it for the first time. You could let it get to 6 inches and thicken up with big roots then use a strimmer for the first cut.
