If you mean by a rotary mower, a hover type, you will end up with a lot more undulations. A cylinder mower or a hover mower with a roller is by far the best choice as the roller tends to flatten the ground leading to a better lawn.

Cylinder mowers give the better finish, on a level lawn. They miss long bits of grass sometimes as they flatten them instead of cutting.
Rotary mowers are better for undulations and cut all the grass. There is also much more choice of mower to buy. The ones that compact the grass in the grass box need less stopping to empty. Lawn sand kills moss.

I have just moved and have a lawn 18x 50, not flat, and different grass, as I have tufts that grow faster then the lawn. I have had a Flymo for 15 yrs, but it had lost its “hover” was held together with tape, but my previous lawn was flat an in ace condition.
I mowed the new lawn 3 times with the Flymo, it looked as if I had cut it with scissors. And it took me 2hrs to do it.
I brought a Bosch rotary, and flew through a wet 10 inch lawn, one hand to push, great.

My husband won’t use anything but a cylinder mower on our (mossy) lawns because he likes the ‘stripes’ of a traditional lawn!
